Public Electric Cooktops

#CooktopBETA

Status: LIVE (concept stage)

CHALLENGE:

Many people in Dublin City do not have the space or permission to have a barbecue at home.

PROPOSITION:

Would the addition of public, electric, cooktops to our parks be a good idea? We'd like to explore the idea.

TRIAL DESCRIPTION:

Fixed electric hotplates present significantly lower environmental and personal safety risks than charcoal and gas barbecues. They mitigate against smoke inhalation and burns, forest and building fires, atmospheric and environmental pollution, and food safety.

Australia has about 40,000 public cooktops. We have installed the first one in Ireland so that we can begin to learn more about the idea. It's located here in Herbert Park, Dublin 4, next to the Hive building, near the playground and tennis courts.

We expect the trial to run for 6-12 months. It will then be fully removed.

This trial is free to use. No booking is required.

It's available for use up to 1 hour before the park's closing time (a timer automatically shuts off power to the cooktop outside of those hours).

To use the cooktop, first clean it and then press a button on the cooktop to begin the sterilisation process before cooking. You can click on image below to read the instructions in detail.

You cook directly on the surface, you don't need to bring any fuel or trays. Just bring your own food, utensils and cleaning supplies. There's a water drinking font next to the cooktop.
