Status: LIVE (scaling stage)
Current Status: Ongoing
Project Stage(s): Concept
Live Trial Location(s): Removed
(What are the Project Stages?)
(Why are trials removed?)
DESCRIPTION:
Should residents be able to apply to park their bicycles in an onstreet, shared, bicycle hangar near their home? (You can read the original, longer, Beta Project description over here on the old DCC Beta website.)
A callout was made on social media for interested people who would like to trial a bike hangar near their home, and 6 residents from 4 households took part in this trial of 1 residential bicycle hangar.
The location was chosen due to the proximity of the relevant Dublin City Council staff, as a low-trafficked street, and also as it does not tend to reach full occupancy of its car parking provision.
The hangar was from the company Cyclehoop, and represents the general concept of a hangar.
'Tours’ of the hangar were offered to the public (via social media) during lunchtimes and evenings on 3 occasions.
The bicycle hangar was removed at the trial end, after 5 months.
OUTCOMES:
This trial cost €4,800 (supply of hangar and delivery from UK, plus the installation and the removal of the hangar post-trial.)
Report Card: Residential Bicycle Hangars, Iteration 1
DECISION:
Persevere.
(What are the possible project outcomes?)
NEXT STEPS:
This BETA Project is now being scaled as BikeBunkers - see www.bikebunkers.ie for more information, including on registering your interest.

For terraced houses such as mine with no front garden this could be a great (i.e. safe, sheltered and convenient) way to store bikes plus it avoids bringing muck indoors and damaging interior walls etc. Would be particularly appropriate for city centre residents that are less likely to own a car due to ideal cycling proximity to everything.

In theory, yep, good idea. In practice, it’s a note to bike thieves that here is a handful of bikes that could be easily robbed.

Hi, I live in Broadstone D7. We have 5 neighbours each with 2 bikes. Would love to apply for a bike shed, we would be willing to pay same as car park permit. How do we apply?

YES! I lived in London for years where these work fantastically! I’m a Stoneybatter resident - how do I apply for one here?

I would like somewhere to store my bike. But these hangars are quite ugly and expensive. If people have expensive bikes they’re probably not going to trust it and if it’s a cheaper bike - you don’t want to pay money to park it. Conundrum.
