Digital Keys

#DigitalKeysBETA

Herbert Park, Dublin 4

Status: LIVE (concept stage)

CHALLENGE:

For security purposes, certain park facilities in Dublin City must be locked when not in use. This requires Council staff to unlock and relock the facility for occasional users, adding to their workload and potentially disrupting their other duties. For regular users, such as sports coaches, traditional metal keys can be issued. However, these keys must be physically distributed, and there is a risk of them being lost or copied, which leads to reduced control over access.

PROPOSAL:

Would the use of digital keys instead of physical ones make park facilities more accessible for residents, improve security, and reduce administrative work for the Council?

TRIAL DESCRIPTION:

We have replaced the traditional padlock on the astro enclosure in Herbert Park with a smart padlock. Both occasional and regular keyholders will be sent a 'digital key' to their smartphone which will enable them to open and close the lock.

We would like to learn more about:

  1. Any issues that users have with the technology.
  2. User feedback on using digital keys versus traditional keys.
  3. Impact on Council staff workload.
