Following a period of hibernation, and subsequent Report on DCC Beta summarising its initial development period of 3.5 years, a decision was made last Friday 16th December 2016 following a City Architects review, to discontinue the DCC Beta platform.
The DCC Beta website (including the various Report Cards on individual Beta Projects) will remain insitu as an archive and reference for others.
The three DCC Beta social media accounts will also remain in place as an archive of conversations, but will not be monitored from this date forward.
On behalf of Dublin City Council, I would like to take this opportunity to offer HUGE thanks to each and every one of you for all of your support and assistance during this project.
All my very best,
Shane Waring

I’m writing from Vancouver BC - a long way from Dublin, but very close to the spirit of DCC Beta. In 2011 I co-founded CityStudio Vancouver as an experimentation hub for the City of Vancouver. The mission was to unite city staff with students and community members to co-create projects and prototypes on the ground in communities in order to create a more liveable, sustainable, joyful and socially just city. As we grew, we scoured the planet for other examples to learn from, and of course we found The Studio and DCC Beta when my partner Sabrina was working with the Studio and IwB. We studied and learned from you, and such an inspiration was your work in Dublin, that we never fail to mention you in our origin story. 5 years later CityStudio has launched 235 projects and experiments that learn how to improve the city. Students have devoted over 120,000 hours of project work, experiments and prototypes for public sector innovation. Gathering this learning over the past 5 years, we launched a collaboration with CoV Planning and Public Art called the Imagination Zone this past fall and we’ll launch Pt II in the summer of 2017. http://citystudiovancouver.com/projects/the-imagination-zone/
Thank you for your inspiring work and please know that the Studio and DCC Beta lives on!

Hi Duane,
Your work in Vancouver sounds wonderful. Its so unfortunate that the DCC Beta project has come to an end. I just walked by one of their painted electricity boxes on north king street in Dublin 7 today. What a wonderful blast of colour. I live in a town north of Dublin called Balbriggan. I am involved in community projects in the town. Currently we are in the process of driving projects for a skatepark and community playground, as well as other projects involved in rejuvenating the town park. I have taken inspiration, like you, from DCC beta projects for proposals we have submitted for projects to our local council. It is such a shame to see that the DCC beta project has closed down. We need something like that out where I live. Maybe starting in a small town like Balbriggan where I live would be a better place to start. Its size would make it more manageable and there are a lot of schools that would be delighted to get involved. If you have any info about how you got started id be delighted to hear.
Hopefully the DCC beta will start running again.
Take care,
Sean

I’m sad! This was great, and I’d love for it to come back. Will miss you!
