What would we like street corner signs to do? What could they be doing for us? Will they shortly be redundant – because of smartphones, for example?

Street corner signs should be beautiful (like the lovely deep blue Paris ones or the old deep green Dublin ones with white edging) in an attractive colour (not the current hideous plasticky pale blue); the Irish typeface should be distinguished from the English, and they should actually use the correct names in Irish (eg Sráid Cineilm, Bóthar Tigh Chláir, not Sráid Kenilworth, Bóthar Clareville).
It might be a good idea to have two signs - the one in English and Irish 3 metres up, and a QR code version at scannable height.
It would also be good if they were on every street corner; many the baffled lost tourist I’ve helped as they stared wildly around looking for street names on nameless streets. And don’t go looking at Google Maps, it’ll tell you that you’re on R29642, not Smyth Street.

To pick up on the previous post, the idea of QR code street signs could have fantastic potential for tourism. Street signs could link to text or short audio ‘tours’ of the street, its history, how it got its name etc. A visitor (or local!) could get a self-guided tour of the whole city that way, and such an initiative this would strengthen the image of Dublin as a forward-looking tech hub.
